Information on the jojoba oil in the “Climaxima®” Lubricant:
Jojoba Seed and its Extract. The color and shape of jojoba seeds are reminiscent of coffee beans, however close examination reveals significant differences. Jojoba seeds are far larger, and their sizes and shapes are not uniform.
Differences are more than skin deep, however. Of more than 350,000 identified plant species, jojoba is the only one which produces significant quantities of liquid wax esters akin to the natural restorative esters produced by human sebaceous glands. For you chemists out there, the esters, of high molecular weight, are composed almost entirely of straight-chain acids and alcohols. The acids are a mixture of eicosanoic and docosanoic, with small quantities of palmitoleic and oleic. The alcohols consist of eicosanol and docosanol, with smaller quantities of hexacosanol and alcohols of lower molecular weight.
Jojoba seeds contain alpha, delta, and gamma tocopherols, all forms of vitamin E. The extractable liquid content of our matured jojoba seeds ranges from 50% to 54.
Native Americans discovered the importance and versatility of jojoba. They heated jojoba seeds to soften them and then used pestle and mortar to create a salve or buttery substance. The latter was applied to the skin and hair to heal and condition. Native Americans also used the salve to soften and preserve animal hides. Pregnant women ate jojoba seeds, believing they assisted during childbirth. Hunters and raiders munched jojoba on the trail to keep hunger at bay.
This latter use is attracting more attention, today. From experience, Native Americans knew that jojoba seeds suppressed hunger. They simply didn't know why. Modern research has revealed that Jojoba seeds contain simmondsins. Simmondsins are monoglucosides, not found in any other plant species. They act as an appetite suppressant. A number of companies are currently working on ways of isolating the simmondsins for use as a dietary supplement.
Pressing the Seed. Excellent seed quality is essential to producing consistently high quality jojoba. Responsible pressing is equally important. Our jojoba seed is pressed only once, in accordance with organic processing standards. We press to optimize quality, not to maximize yield. We insist on a light pressing, and we do not re-cycle the remaining press cake back through the press after the first pressing. We sell our press cake to others, even though it is still rich in extractable content.
This is not refined jojoba oil. Refined jojoba is clear or "water-like" in appearance. It has been de-colored, de-odorized, stabilized, neutralized, and de-gummed. Synthetic vitamin E may have been added to refined jojoba to replace natural tocopherols destroyed during refining. Refined jojoba is obtained from one of three sources: (a) poor quality jojoba seed, (b) presscake remaining after the first pressing, and (c) jojoba which has been solvent-extracted from meal remaining after the second pressing. The refining process essentially strips unrefined jojoba of its natural goodness. Refined jojoba is a by-product, which manufacturers most often use in formulations of nationally marketed personal care products.
Jojoba Scent. The scent and color of pure, unrefined golden liquid jojoba will vary slightly from one crop year to the next. Jojoba has a typical earthy scent, which many people do not notice. Indeed, jojoba scent is ephemeral. When you rub jojoba into your skin, after a short period of time, you smell only your skin, not the jojoba. Perfumers call jojoba a "fixative" because it locks in or "fixes" the scents of the essential oils added to it. Aromatherapists use jojoba as their carrier or base of preference. It is far superior to oils.
Jojoba is stable. It is not oil. Jojoba does not turn rancid, even if left in the trunk of a car on a hot summer day in Florida, Arizona or California. Most members of the jojoba industry overlook this important characteristic of jojoba. They insist on calling jojoba "oil" when, in fact, jojoba is not oil. Any chemist worth his or her salt will tell you that jojoba is a "liquid wax ester".
What's the difference between jojoba and "oils"? All seed or vegetable oils are characterized by the presence of triglycerides, a type of fat. Triglycerides break down and oils, such as sweet almond, grape seed, macadamia and safflower, turn rancid. Jojoba, which is pure, does not contain triglycerides. If you detect triglycerides in jojoba, someone has contaminated it with oil or another additive. Oils will ultimately turn rancid and have to be thrown away. Jojoba has an indefinite shelf life. And, unlike oils, repeated heating to high temperatures does not damage it.
Jojoba is also non-allergenic and non-comedogenic (non-clogging). Likewise, the product does not stain. The first two characteristics are related to the fact that jojoba is a liquid ester molecularly comparable to the esters we produce in our skin. (Our sebaceous glands produce sebum, which is composed primarily of esters like jojoba.) Because it is non-allergenic, jojoba is especially useful to people with sensitive skin. Jojoba does not clog the pores. To the contrary, Jojoba actually cleanses the pores. Finally, the product does not stain. It washes out of natural fabrics with hot water and detergent. Dyed and synthetic fabrics may require the use of a pre-wash
